St Andrew's and St George's Church, Edinburgh

22 December 2008
Congratulations to St Andrew's and St George's Church Edinburgh for gaining an Eco-Congregation Award

This church demonstrates a strong link between faith, creation and action. Some special services have given a powerful message about our stewardship of the earth. Large scale support for charities has been developed with the Christian Aid book sale and the ‘Charity Chic’ shows, both of which make a substantial contribution to recycling. These activities, in the commercial centre of Edinburgh, also demonstrate an alternative to consumerism.

Awareness of creation issues is raised, for example by an excellent up-to-date notice board at the entrance to the church and notices reminding people of the cost of electricity.

This is followed through by good energy management, having awareness of the cost of energy and in planning for the future by using different sorts of lighting. The Undercroft kitchen also practices good environmental management with extensive use of fairtrade products and recycling of waste.
